Abstract
The organotin compounds dibutyltin dichloride (DBTC), diphenyltin dichioride (DPTC), tributyltin chloride (TBTC) and triphenyltin chloride (TPTC) were tested in Trypanosoma brucei-infected mice for trypanocidal activity. DBTC and DPTC where found to be trypanocidal. At a dose of 10mg/kg/day(l 32uM) and 15mg/kg/day(l 75u.M) DBTC and DPTC respectively for five consecutive days cleared the blood of the parasites. Subinoculation of the healthy mice with the homogenates of liver, spleen, kidney and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the mice considered cured; showed 33.3%, 66.7% and 33.3% relapse following the subinoculation with homogenate of liver, spleen and CSF from the DBTC-treated mice respectively while 50.0%, 50% and 33.3% relapses where seen following subinoculation with homogenate of liver spleen and CSF from the DPTC-treated mice respectively. No relapse was seen from the subinoculation of homogenate from the kidney of both DBTC- and DPTC-treated mice Histopathological analysis of the liver and kidney revealed abnormalities associated with destruction of the organ integrity. No significant damage was seen in all the spleens. These compounds (DBTC and DPTC) may be chemotherapeutically useful in the treatment of trypanosomiasis but more is needed to be explored on the toxic effects and none complete clearance of the T. b. brucei from all the bodily tissues of the infected mice
