dc.description.abstract | Evaluation of groundwater resources of Owerri and environs in Imo State, southeastern Nigeria has been done. This involved assessment of groundwater occurrence and flow, aquifer hydraulics (borehole yields, hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity and groundwater flow velocity), hydrochemistry and totalwater reserves (water budget). This was achieved through detailed hydrogeological mapping at the end of wet season (October, 2012) and peak of dry season (April, 2013).The area is underlain by the Benin Formation which is a major lithostratigraphicunit in Niger Delta Basin. One major aquifer unit (unconfined aquifer) is present in the study area. The grain size of the Benin Formation are classified as medium to coarse sand and fine gravel, well to moderately sorted and negatively skewed. The borehole yields (432 to 840 m3/day) and hydraulic properties (K = 4 × 10-1), (T = 864,000 m/s) of the aquifer shows efficiency. Groundwater available for supply that will meet the current and/or projected (years 2015 to 2065) demand in Owerri (study area) is adequate, with surplus of 35,627,867,441.8 m3/a.Average physical parameters of waters in the area such as temperature (26oC), hydraulic conductivity (0.2235μS/cm) and pH(8.5) indicated excellent water for drinking and other purposes. The cations measuredare: Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cd2+,Hg2+. The anions measured are: SO42-,NO3-,, HCO3-. Water quality problems were identified at some sampling points of the study area where the average concentration of mercury (0.001 mg/l), lead (0.0055 mg/l) and cadmium (0.0628 mg/l) are high. The water in the area is largely characterized as Na - Ca - Mg - HCO3with alkaline bicarbonate water type being the most dominant; and amounting to 85 % of the water. The ions trend is in the order: Na+> Ca2+ > Mg2+> K+, for cations and HCO3- > Cl-, for anions.Bacteriological analyses of waters, indicated presence of faecal coliform especially the E-coli. | en_US |
