PERFORMANCE OF BROILER CHICKENS FED FULLFAT LIMA BEAN, GROUNDNUT AND SOYABEAN DIETS.

Abstract
Seven experimental diels, formulated using lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) groundnut (Arachis hypogeae, L.) and soyabean (Glycine max L.) proteins were mixed in varying proportions to supply 23% CP for starter and 20% CP for finisher diels. The diets were chemically analysed and fed broiler chickens for 8 weeks to determine which one could support growth adequately. Commercial guinea feeds starter and finisher diet served as control. Chemical analysis result revealed that most of the diets had protein content below the calculated 23% CP and 20% CP in starter and finisher diets. The diets with soyabean meal had the highest crude protein compared to other experimental diets without soyabean meal. All the experimental diets were not deficient in all the analysed essential amino acids. The energy given food (total digestible carbohydrate plus fat) in the experimental diets were higher than the control diet. Experimental diets with lima bean meal, groundnut meal and groundnut and lima bean meal had the highest energy given food. The crude ash and fibre content were lower than control diet with groundnut meal diets recording the highest fibre content among the experimental diets. Digestibility of all the experimental diets was generally high. The birds fed experimental diets consumed significantly less (P<0.05) food than the ones fed control diets. Birds fed with experimental diets with higher energygiving food (diet 1, 3 and 5) had the lower food consumption rate and the food consumption rale increases with increase in the age of the birds except week 5. In terms of weight gain, FCR and PER, the birds fed diet with soyabean meal, soyabean and lima bean meal, and soyabean, groundnut and lima bean meal (diet 2, 4, 6 and 7) had the best result. Their weight gain does not indicate significant difference (P>0.05) compared with the one fed control diet while that of lima bean meal, groundnut meal and groundnut and lima bean meal (diet 1, 3 and 5) shows a significant difference (P< 0.05).
