Abstract
The objective of the study was to analyse and determine
the research and statistical methods used in the postgraduate
theses and dissertations of Education and Library and
Information Science Departments of Ahmadu Bello University,
Zaria from 1987 to 1997.
Titles of completed theses and dissertation approved and
submitted to the Departments of Education and Library and
Information Science and were available to the researcher
during the period of study constituted the population of the
study. 279 titles of these theses and dissertations were
compared and analyzed.
The method adopted for this study was the documentary
method. The theses and dissertations of the two Departments
were physically examined using evaluative and content analysis
method. The result showed that in terms of statistical methods
used, Post graduate students of Education department used more
of inferential statistics in the analysis of their theses and
dissertations than those of Library and Information Science
Department which are mostly descriptive in nature. However,
there are some theses and dissertations from both Departments
that did not use any form of statistics. In terms of the
research method adopted by the postgraduate students from the
two Departments under study, it was discovered that the
students from both Departments used almost the same research
methods. There are some students from some sections of
Education Department that used some methods such as quasi
experimental, expos facto in their theses and dissertations.
On the whole, there were similarities in both the research
and statistical methods used in the analyses of the theses and
dissertations of the postgraduate students of Library and
Information Science and Education departments. This could be
due to the fact that both category of students are taught by
the same statistics and research method lecturers.
In the light of these findings, the researcher recommends
that postgraduate students of Education and Library and
Information Science should be firmly grounded in their
knowledge of both research and statistical methods.
