    THE ORGANIZATION OF UNITED NATIONS DOCUMENTS IN THE LIBRARIES OF AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

    The effective utilization of any library will depend to a Large extent on the proper organization of its materials and provision of effective retrieval systems. It is through efficient cataloguing and classification that the large collections of libraries are made accessible to the users. This study examines the organization of United Nations documents of two depository Libraries namely: Kushim Ibrahim Library, Ahmadu Bello University and the Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, in relation to the system used by the United Nations itself. The organization system of UN documents of the two libraries was carefully studied and examined by the researcher. In addition, an interview instrument was designed and administered to the document librarians of the two libraries. It was found that while KDL uses an archival system similar to that of the UN, the KIL employs a subject classification system based on LCC. In both cases, the systems employed have fallen short of the UN system and have therefore not been adequate enough to allow satisfactory organization of all UN documents deposited to these libraries. This deficiency has been compounded by inadequate subject bibliographical services. vii On the basis of these so findings, the study has proposed several recommendations aimed in improving the organization system of the UN documents in the two libraries under study. This would ultimately make the UN collections more easily accessible to the users and therefore better utilized
