- ItemEVALUATING MATERIAL APPLICATION WASTE ON BUILDING CONSTRUCTION SITES A CASE STUDY OF KADUNA STATE(2000-09) ABDULAZEEZ, ABUBAKAR DARDA'UThis study was aimed at evaluating material application waste on building construction sites in Kaduna State. The need for the study arose from the observations made on ever-increasing material wastes in most building construction sites in the State. The study centered on magnitude of material waste, causes and how to minimize these waste so as to enhance the maximum utilization of scarce resources. The research data were obtained from survey of forty-construction sites in the State through the use of questionnaires, observations and personal interview. The data generated were misanalysed by simple arithmetic formula. The results obtained indicated that the average actual waste of sandcastle blocks material used at these sites is about 9.37%, and that of ready mixed concrete and roofing sheet is 6.32% and 5.93% respectively. The magnitude of these waste obtained during the execution of the work is far more than the normal allowance of 5% made on sandcastle blocks material, 2.5% and 5% on ready mixed concrete and roofing materials respectively, often made in estimating and technical accounting conventions. The analyses of the data also showed contractors have little experience in measuring material wastage on sites. It is therefore, recommended that to minimize these wastes on sites, control of material usage should be regarded as a continuing process at each successive stage in the life of a building project as it involves a variety of individuals with different job functions.
