- ItemTHERMO LUMINESCENCE DOSIMETRY OF SOME NATURAL MINERAL SAMPLES(1994-09) ABAFONI, Jackson JockthanNatural mineral compounds of geologic origin usually contain diverse kinds of impurities, mechanical defects and imperfections lying in their forbidden energy levels. Some of these exhibit thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics when exposed to ionising radiation and heated at constant rate. Natural minerals obtained locally (here in Nigeria) were ground into powder and thermoluminescence dosimetry properties were studied through artificial irradiation of the samples using Sr 9°-Y9 o B source at different dose levels. Using the Solaro Model 680 TLD reader, TL corresponding to a particular radiation dose can be obtained. The TL properties studied are based on the proposals for the International standards for TLDs. Tests required by international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which are fading rate, dose versus response linearity, effect of ambient light and stability of dosemeters under standard climatic condition, and tests required by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) which include batch homogeneity, detection threshold, stability of zero point, repeatability and residual TL, have been investigated. The results obtained in this work are in partial agreement with the recommendations for the international standards for TLDs. Suggestions therefore, have been made on how to improve upon this present research in order to achieve the desired goal of producing dosimetric phosphors for use in various fields of radiation detection and measurements.
