Abstract
This dissertation was prompted by a deep interest in the education for professional librarians. It was made possible through the support of Bureau of Research, Office of Education, U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and the sponsorship and cooperation of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Appreciation is expressed to both of these oiganizations, Special thanks are due Dr. Frank B. Sessa who served as advisor to this study. Gratitude is also hereby expressed to the other members of the dissertation committee, Dr. Donald L. Cleland, Dr. Jay E. Daily, Professor Allen Kent, and Dr. Harold Lancour. Without the participation of a number of large public libraries and library schools, named in Appendix 1, this study would not have been possible. Their cooperation is gratefully recognized. For permission to quote rather extensively from one of their publications, the writer is indebted to David McKay Company, Inc., New York.
