Abstract
ABSTRACT
The Central Business District (CBD) of any city is its
economic, political and social nerve centre. Because of those
activities large numbers of vehicles are attracted there. There
are several parking problems experienced in the Kaduna CBD.
This study focused on measuring the parking demand and supply
in the Kaduna CBD. The object is understanding the
charactersitics of parking in the CBD as a basis for making
recommendations for effective planned provision of parking
facilities. Quantitative and qualitative characteristices of
parking, including aspects of parking durations in the CBD were
surveyed.
For the purpose of the study, the CBD was divided into four
landuse sectors. Parking deficits and surpluses in the different
sectors were determined. Some of the findings in the study
include the fact that parking facilities are in short supply in
all the sectors. The entire CBD is in short supply of public
parking areas especially for long-term parking. Most of the
private business/commercial centres of the CBD use kerbsides for
parking. This practice is found to be responsible for a high
percentage of traffic hold-ups experienced especially along busy
streets like Ahmadu Bella Way, Ibrahim Taiwo Road and
Broadcasting Road.
Having established the level of demand fur parking facilities
the study set out to examine and establish the space requirements
to meet the present and future levels of parking demand. Against
-vthe
background of the findings, recommendations were made for
surface parking within the CBD. Recommendations were made both
for on-street and off-street parking at the areas" considered most
appropriate. Two design proposals were made, one for on-street
parking and the other for off-street parking. Other general
policy recommendations were made for parking in the CBD as well
as for further research.
