Abstract
This study evaluates the effectiveness of DFRRI's rural water Schemes in the Makarfi and Soba Local Government Areas of Kaduna State. To this end, primary and secondary data were gathered and analysed. Twenty sampled villages were selected and from each village, 15 respondents were sampled. The village heads and community development officers were also interviewed. The results obtained from the data show that the DFRRI , water projects have not attained the desired success, especially in Soba Local Government, where most of the boreholes are not functioning. There is also the problem of poor planning which has resulted in poor distribution of the wells. This forces some people to travel long distances to got water, especially during the dry season, while others have the wells behind their residences. Other problems militating against the water scheme include shortages of funds and lack of manpower. Various government agencies that are involved in water supply development in the study area tend to work independently of one another, resulting in poor coordination. Projects are also imposed on the people without consultation. The nonparticipation of the people in the planning and execution of the water projects, has contributed to the failure of some boreholes.
