dc.description.abstract | The railways was the single greatest and most far-reaching innovation of the 19th century, re-shaping both towns and countries and transforming societies, the principal task of the railway was, however, moving of raw materials and manufactured goods. The Nigerian railways, despite the fact that there was relatively high volume of passengers in the stations, it has little or nothing to offer in terms of comfort from the station where journey begins to the destination station. The poor condition in the stations and in the trains can be described as hell, where bonafide ticket holders have to struggle before boarding the trains, this can be attributed to the poor ticket collection and checking system, coupled with the multi-exit situation in most of the stations. This allow for the indiscriminate presence of hawkers, beggars and sometimes insane fellows in the stations. The redevelopment of Zaria railway station will be the subject of consideration for the purpose of this thesis, it may suffice to say that the existing structures of the stations are no doubt functionally inadequate and aesthetically bankrupt amongst other attendant problems. This work is projected at transforming the expression of the structures to be more adaptive without compromising the judicious appropriation of functional spaces, upholding hierarchy and establishing a chaos free circulation pattern within and outside the structural envelope of the station. It cannot be overemphasized that the spicing of the 'near relics' on ground will encourage patronage and regain the confidence of the general populace and invariably the Government. | en_US |
