dc.description.abstractThe variation exhibited within populations of the Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera, L) in Nigeria would appear to suggest that these populations originated from seedlings. The distribution of the palms in the arid and semi arid sudan and subsudan ecological zones of Nigeria suggests that climatic factors like low rainfall, low humidity and high temperature may have favoured their adaptation in these zones. In the absence of recognised varieties, random sampling of populations was practised. Twenty four population types were recognised and their fruit and seedling characteristics described. A population type was defined as the mean performance of a population of palms sharing a common gene pool within a single location. Collection and evaluation of the locally adapted genotypes is a long term investment for the systematic improvement of the Date Palm in Nigeria. It is suggested that the Samaru Germplasm Repository fulfils the need for such an investment.en_US
