Abstract
Financing agricultural projects has been extremely difficult in Nigeria. Banks in Nigeria especially the commercial ones have shown a persistent reluctance to give financial assistance to farmers for numerous reasons, while the Nigerian Agricultural and Cooperative Bank established for this purpose could not adequately meet the financial needs of the Nigerian farmers. The Bauchi state Government have long recognised the fact that the absence of an agricultural credit institution is one of the major impediments to agricultural development in the country. Thus, the Bauchi State Cooperative Financing Agency Ltd. was established in 1976 to provide the much needed finance to farmers in order to increase their production.
This study attempts to appraise the performance of the Cooperative Financing Agency Limited in relation to its stated objectives. It attempts to identify the problems faced by the agency in providing agricultural loans to farmers and the problems faced by farmers in obtaining loans from the agency. It also attempts to suggest solutions where possible to the problems identified as being encountered by both the farmers and the agency.
