Abstract
Despite strong optimism that the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria in
1999 would avert or contain conflicts, there has been frequent recurrence of
violent conflicts in the country manifesting in either ethnic or religious and mostly
a combination of both forms. The country has witnessed high level ethnic and
religious conflicts with devastating consequences on human life and property. In
other words, the country has produced a catalogue of conflicts with ethnicity and
religion being manipulated, resulting in loss of lives in an unprecedented manner
and unquantifiable psychological and material damages. The study explored the
secondary data generated from vast literature on the subject matter in addition to
a personal survey and interview. Applying a combination of both qualitative and
quantitative methods, the study attempted to find out the impact of violent
conflicts on inter-group relations in Zango Kataf Local Government Area of
Kaduna State, 1999-2011. The arguments were presented within the context of
theory of cultural-pluralism, using stratified sampling as a method or framework
for data generation and analysis. The research submits that the local government
has played host to different conflicts. It has been deeply enmeshed and suffused in
violent conflicts characterized by killings and displacement of persons, loss of
business investments and loss of properties worth millions of naira leading to
deterioration of harmonious co-existence or relations (disharmony, hostility,
suspicion and distrust) with religion, ethnicity, poverty and unemployment
manipulated to achieve political objectives.
