Abstract
Although the primary motivation for participation in recreation is personal enjoyment, it may result in intellectual, physical and social growth of an individual. Different approaches have been used in the planning and development of recreational facilities, they are however, found to be inadequate for sustainable recreational development. This study assesses the limitations of the policies and approaches to the planning and development of recreational facilities in Jalingo. It suggests major shortcomings in the planning policies and approach, culminating into inadequacy of recreational facilities in Jalingo town. In view of the above shortcomings, an appropriate approach is adopted and planning proposals made. It is proposed that the plan would be implemented in 3 phases. It is to involve the public, private and voluntary organisations. A coordinating body has also been proposed.
