Abstract
This Study was undertaken first to establish the justification or otherwise of the boarding school
system in relation to the moral, discipline and academic standards of the female students in Post
Primary Institutions of Katsina State Secondly, it was meant to ascertain the functioning of the schools
in respect of general administration and leadership functions of the individuals who are directly
responsible for managing them. Based on these views of the Principals, House Masters/Mistresses,
form teachers, School Prefects and Executives of the Parent Teachers' Association were sought.
A number of literatures pertaining to concepts of organisation and boarding school system in
Nigeria and some African countries like Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia as compared to other
developed countries such as America and Britain were reviewed. Also a review of the administration of
boarding schools in Kaduna and Katsina States with focus on roles of the principals, teachers, society
and school boards in managing the schools were made. At the end, prospects, issues, advantages
and disadvantages of the boarding school system were highlighted.
The population for this research consists of all the School principals, teachers, students and their
parents and guardians. Since there were only eight female institutions in Katsina State, sampling
was not required; therefore all the schools were involved in the study. Three main instruments were
used for data collection, they include the questionnaire, observation and informal discussions.
The statistical methods applied for data analysis are the two-tailed t-test, the Arithmetic mean and
percentage presentation.
The major findings of the study imply that hoarding system of education among
female institutions in Katsina State should be retained, basically because it has
improved the moral and discipline standards of the students. However, the system is yet
to yield desirable results towards academic performance of the students. This has been
attributed to inadequate school facilities, poor quality of teachers and lack of
students interest in school work among other factors.
