Abstract
The development of the tourism industry in any country is hinged on the success of the hospitality industry of that particular country. This research analyzed the distribution of hotels in Kaduna metropolis and the quality of services these hotels provide. The research established the need for a database containing information about the hotels in the area. The objectives of the study were to map the spatial distribution of the hotels, the pattern of distribution, and classify the hotels based on the services they provided. The Global Positioning System (GPS)receiverwas used to capture the geographiccoordinates of the hotels. The list of registered hotels and their addresses were obtained from Kaduna State Ministry of Arts and Culture while the hoteliers were interviewed to gather data on the quality of services offered to the guests. The coordinates were overlaid on a topographic map of the metropolis to show their exact location. To determine the pattern of distribution, a Nearest Neighbour Analysis was performed. A relational database was created and queries were performed to get information about the hotels. Thereafter, the hotels were rated based on the UK classification scheme. It was found that 44.1% of hotels in the metropolis are in the 1 star category. It was also observed that the hotels in the 3 star category are the highest category in the area. It was also observed that some parts of the metropolis, likeKakuri which is the industrial hub of the city did not have a registered hotel. Furthermore, the pattern of distribution is such that the hotels cluster in certain parts of the metropolis that are proximate to the city center. It is therefore recommended that government should invest in infrastructure because it has a direct bearing on the hospitality industry. It is also pertinent that hoteliers upgrade their services so that they can meet international standards.
