Abstract
Surveys conducted on importance of soil pests on
groundnut production indicated that the majority of farmers
were aware of damage caused by soil pests to groundnut,
Bakura, Mamudo, Sada, Ngurore, Girei and Gusau are areas
where soil pests cause great damage to groundnut.
Experiments conducted elsewhere indicated that millipedes
were found to be causing damage at germination and from the
5th to 7th week after planting. Termites on the other hand
caused greater damage at crop maturity.
Biological studies were conducted to raise colonies of
Macrotermef subhyalinus (Rambur) - (a minor pest of groundnut
in the Guinea Savanna) in the laboratory. Two methods were
successfully adopted, namely; the aluminium foil method and
the glass plate method. Observations were made on colony
development, brood development, foraging and fungus-comb
establishment. This is a significant achievement not only
for the purposes of obtaining further information on the
biology, feeding habits and food preferences of termites in
the laboratory but also for the bioassay of candidate
insecticides for subsequent control measures in the field.
From the field trials it was found that carbofuran
(Furadan 3G) did not give significant control of soil
pests of groundnuts.
