Abstract
There is a growing interest in the performance of the building industry ana its role in national development. Concern has been expressed by government, private sector and the general public over the professional conducts and even the relevance of the professions that make up the building industry. This is because after many years of professional training and practices in Nigeria not a reasonable number of Nigerians have been provided with affordable houses in both the rural and urban centers. Major construction works are handled by the foreign expatriate either owing to the lack of interest. Either way indicates an in-house problem in the building industry that is affecting its effective professional operation. This thesis therefore highlights those problems affecting the effective operation of the building industry, the causes and finally proposes a Centre for professional excellence for the Nigerian building industry. An environment for voluntary continuing education for the promotion of mutual professional training and practice, for research in the related fields of building construction techniques and for professional grooming for the purpose of professional recognition.
