| dc.description.abstract | This study is a description and analysis of university presses in Nigeria; with particular emphasis on their past and present activities, their publication procedure and types of publication emanating from them, and finally their expected role within the context of our society. In order to carry out the research, the universities having presses were selected. This was done by writing all the universities in the country to officially ascertain those having functioning presses. The data and information for this study have been collected by using questionnaires, personal interviews with Managing Directors, editors, Marketing managers and library resources. To test the hypothesis postulated, questionnaire used was designed to elicit opinions and feelings of the staff of the presses on the role of the university presses. The information obtained from the questionnaire as well as the ones obtained from discussion with the staff members were used to test the hypotheses,to draw conclusions, and to make the recommendations. The study has revealed that: (a) the support given to the university presses is haphazard and this has an adverse vi effect on their output, (b) the presses are concentrating on scholarly materials alone, thus their impact on the larger society of which they are a part is limited, (c) the university-type bureaucratic procedures is handicapping their publishing programme. On the basis of above findings, suggestion was given that the presses be accorded with wide support and subsidy from their parent bodies as they provide educational services which are beneficial to the whole society. Likewise constricting regulations should be done away with so that the presses can have the same freedom like some other private businesses. | en_US |
