Abstract
'All architecture proposes on effect on the human mind,
not merely service to the human frame"
- JOUNRUSK1N
The need to develop our hospitals to meet the growing health care need of our people
cannot, at this point of our national development, be over emphasised. This basically is
due to the threat of extinction posed to n\an by diseases, some of which are termed
incurable but of which patients at the same need some medical attention. Yet our
hospitals arc in such a deplorable and pitiable state that one wonders at their ability to
cure a single disease. This thesis examines the need for the redevelopment and
improvement of our hospitals with special reference to Vom General Hospital in Vom,
Jos, Plateau State.
Vom General Hospital was built in the early part of this century (1922) by two
British Missionaries. Rev. Dr. and Mrs P.W. Barnden. The hospital, located in Vom, was
initially meant to cater for the health care need of the people of Vom and its surrounding
environment but with the growing discontent for the poor services rendered by
government, hospitals and the exorbitant rates charged by private clinics and also due to
the awareness of their efficiency and the high quality services they render, people troop
in from different parts of the country and the West African sub-region and the Cameroon
to receive medical attention there. This calls for the need to redevelop and upgrade the
standard of the hospital to meet the growing need of the people.
The author of this thesis proposal has observed the absence of some vital
infrastructural facilities in the hospital, of which this thesis examines the need to provide
them. These include an up-to-date adjunct diagnostic facilities, maternity, emergency and
multi-clinics and an improvement on nursing facilities (wards).
