Abstract
ABSTRACT The main thrust of this study is to critically examine the operational activities of Unit Trust Scheme in Nigeria and the benefits that accrue to unit holders from this form of investment, using the chi-square test <x2> distribution as the analytical technique. It was observed that the scheme had contributed positively to the standard of living of the investors, within the period covered by the study. This was revealed empirically by the strong correlation between unit holders' income per unit holdings and the dividends that accrue from such units. therefore, in a bid for the unit trusts to grow, develop and maintain, and continue to mobilise and attract idle funds into the financial system for the benefit of the investors, it is recommended that a legal advisory body be designed and set up to protect investors against fraudulent practices of operators and to maintain investors' and operators' confidence in the Unit Trust Scheme. The above step is all the more necessary because we observed (from the study) that unnecessary bureaucracy has caused obstruction towards the smooth operation of the scheme.
