Abstract
Social media is the fastest growing and dominant trend in the use of technology in
modern times. Social networking generally refers to the interaction of people using
various social media platforms with the absence of geographical location andtime
barriers. However, there are contrasting opinions on the impact of social media on
students' academic development, aimed at strengthening growing knowledge about the
influence of social media usage on students with a view to enhancing their learning and
academic development. This study provided further clarification on the potential
benefits of social media on education by establishing the students‟ knowledge of social
media sites and determining how social media use can affect the academic performance
of the students of Rimi College in Kaduna State. The study adopted the survey research
design using both the quantitative and qualitative methods. The instruments used in
gathering data for the study are questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion (FGD).The
simple descriptive method showing the frequency and percentage of data collected was
used to analyse the quantitative data while simple narrative was employed for
qualitative information gathered through the FGD. The researcher used a formula
propounded by Morgan to determine the sample size of the estimated population of
360. That is, simple random sampling method was used to get the sample size,
whichwas186 students. From the data and information analysed, it was found that most
of the students (98.0%) were subscribers of Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter 2go,
YouTube, etc., and had access to the internet. The study also found that social media
has significantly helped the students to access and share academic materials and also
enable them to interact. Based on the findings, the study recommended that academic
institutions should embrace the use of social media in enhancing learning and
communication. That is, students-to-students and teachers-to-students in order to make
academic teaching and learning more convenient, effective and efficient. This research
gathered that the overall attitude of respondents and participants was positive to an
extent towards Social Media and its use within academic environment.
