Abstract
This study sets out to assess the reading difficulties among
students of kaduna Polytechnic which is used as a case study. It focuses
on National and Higher National Diploma Students. The importance of
reading, especially in the learning process, needs no emphasis as it is
an indispensable tool for any effective learning.
Three factors are used to carry out (his study - the background
knowledge of the students, the reading text and the reader’s intent. The
study identifies the Students reading difficulties, examines their
causative factors and also proposes how the difficulties would be
removed.
For the realization of these objectives, four main instruments
were used for data collection. The background questionnaire was made
of 22 questions - both close and open- ended designed to gather sociolinguistic
information on the target population. The teachers'
questionnaire was aimed at detecting further where the difficulties
were and their remedies.
The close and vocabulary tests were designed to identify the degree of
the students' difficulties. The data were analysed in percentages and
represented in questions and tables.
Our findings reveal that the students have a lot of reading
problems. More fundamentally, this study finds out that as a result of
the students’ difficulties, interest for reading is totally lacking. The
study concludes that the existence of the numerous difficulties
constitutes a serious obstacle to the students’ learning and is
responsible, if not wholly, at least in part, for the continuing downward
slide in the standard of education. Suggestions are, therefore, made
with regard to how students' reading difficulties could possibly be
redressed.
