Abstract
The study entitled “The Effects of Hausa Dialectal Differences on the Motivation and Writing Performance in some Hausa of NCE Students in Northern Nigeria Colleges of Education” Examined the effects of Hausa dialects (the features of grammar and vocabulary, as well as aspects of pronunciation of different dialect boundary that speaks the same language) on writing performance and motivation of NCE students in Northern Nigeria Colleges of Education. The population for the study comprises the entire Hausa students of the Northern Nigeria Colleges of Education. Three research questions were raised base on objectives of the study. A survey design was used for the study . A purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample schools according to the three geo-political zones (North-West, North-Central and North-East) of the Northern region of Nigeria. One college was selected from each region. An essay writing assignment was given to the students. The essay written by the students was used as an instrument for data collection and the statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 16 was used to analyse the data that was gathered. P-test and one way of variance ( ANOVA) were used for testing the effect of Hausa dialectal differences on the components of assay ( content, orgnisation, expression and mechanical accuracy) at 0.05 alpha value. The result of the study revealed that Hausa dialect reflects in students writing. And the reflections of the dialects have significant affects on the components of essay writing. The dialectal differences also affect morphological and syntactical structure of standard Hausa and eventually violate the orthographical rules. Based on these findings, it is recommended that curriculum planers should review the current NCE Hausa curriculum to effect changes that is commensurate with students’ needs. Hausa lecturers should put more effort in teaching orthography and standard Hausa respectively. They should also help their students to understand the effect of using dialect especially in writing on orthographical and grammatical rules.
