Abstract
Science as the bedrock of technological advancement is very important in national development. This has been pointed to in previous research studies and results of Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations. As a way to improve on the quality of Science Education, this study was undertaken to find out the relationship between students’ achievements in identified chemical concepts and balancing of chemical equations. The sample of the study consisted of 180 SS II chemistry students from six Senior Secondary Schools in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State. The population of the study comprised fourteen Senior Secondary Schools in Otukpo Local Government Area. The data for the study was collected by the use of test scores with a reliability coefficient r = 0.70. The Pearsons’ Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to test the stated hypotheses of the relationship between the understanding of chemical concepts and students’ achievement in balancing chemical equations. Also t- test statistic was used. These were tested at P = 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study were as follows:- (i) There was a significant relationship between the understanding of the identified chemical concepts and students’ competency in v i i balancing chemical equations. (2) There was significant relationship between boys’ understanding of identified chemical concepts and their achievement in balancing chemical equations. (3) There was significant relationship between girls’ understanding of identified chemical concepts and their achievement in balancing chemical equations. (4) There was significant difference in the mean score of students in the identified chemical concepts and their mean score in balancing chemical equations. (5) There was significant difference in the mean scores of boys and girls in balancing chemical equations. (6) The identified chemical concepts serve as pre-requisites for competence in balancing chemical equations. Based on the findings from the study, recommendations were made that were considered useful in improving the quality of instruction and understanding in chemistry; especially in the important area of balancing of chemical equations.
