This study entitled Documentary Credit Operations in Commercial Banks, a case study of Lion Bank of Nigeria PLC is an attempt to examine the role of Lion Bank of Nigeria PLC as one of the Central Bank of Nigeria Agents in achieving prompt settlements for international transactions. The study is prompted on the ground that the Federal Government of Nigeria wants to strengthen and stabilize the Naira exchange rate and documentary credit operations. The objective of the study therefore is to critically examine the procedure of documentary credit operations of Commercial Banks over the period. In analysing the documentary credit operations of commercial banks, Lion Bank of Nigeria PLC is picked at random as sample of other commercial banks, the researcher made use of both Primary and Secondary data. The data revealed high concentration of the procedure involved when opening a letter of credit. Certain set back of the documentary procedure bank have also been identified. This include, the inability of the bank officials to properly put in place the necessary documents to facilitate the opening of the L/C consequently leading to the rejection of the document by Central Bank of Nigeria and the general problem which is non-availability of funds in the foreign reserve by the government. Based on the above, it is recommended among other things that the Federal Government should source for more foreign exchange to beef up the country foreign reserves.en_US
