dc.description.abstract | The main concern of this project was to study the teachers' perceptions of co-curricular activities in ten selected postprimary institutions in Zaria Local Government Area. The study was limited to boarding post-primary institutions in Zaria. The data collection was by a questionnaire which was administered to the senior and permanent teaching staff of the post primary boarding institutions. The questionnaire was designed to determine the teachers' perceptions with the view of finding answers to the following questions: (a) Do teachers accept co-curricular activities as part of their functions, or do they conceive of these as imposition by the school principal? (b) Do teachers take part in co-curricular activities because of financial reward? (c) Do teachers think that co-curricular activities contribute to the attainment of the aims and objectives of a post-primary institution? The study revealed that 56% of the teachers did not perceive co-curricular activities as part of their responsibilities. More men than women were found to perceive co-curricular activities as part of their responsibilities. The study also revealed that the more the teaching experiences of a teacher, the more negative the teacher perceived co-curricular activities as part of his responsibilities. 90% of the teachers did not consider financial reward as a condition for taking part in co-curricular activities. The study, however, revealed that 89% of the teachers perceived that co-curricular activities contribute to the attainment of the aims and objectives of a post-primary institutions. The reasons for their negative attitude towards their participation therefore, remains problematic, which can only be ascertained by future research. | en_US |
