dc.description.abstractOne of the most essential factors in a country's progress is the development of its human resources. This factor is wanting in Nigeria in which the majority of the population is illiterate. In view of the importance of adult literacy in national development, the thesis tries to suggest a multimedia strategy of teaching adult literacy by television, and this is in addition to the existing literacy classes. The background interest to this study is described briefly in Chapter One. This is followed in Chapters Three and Four by the backgrounds to the geography and adult literacy in Northern Nigeria. In Chapter Four an attempt is made to look critically at the adult literacy approaches in Kaduna State. Chapter Five, which is devoted mainly to the recommendation of television as an additional media for adult literacy, discusses: the organization of the television literacy classes; and the importance of the multimedia approach in adult literacy. The concept of the new literacy and the importance of relevance, participation and cooperation in adult literacy are also discussed. The chapter also examines the importance and the distribution of television community viewing centers in Kaduna State. The thesis concludes by stressing, in Chapter Six, the importance of relating the program-mes of adult literacy to the problems or interests of the learners. It also points to the fact that the major burden of responsibility for adult literacy education in Nigeria rests squarely on the shoulders of the Federal and State Governments.en_US
