Abstract
This research entitled: « LA FEMME DANS LA BATARDE DE VIOLETTE LEDUC ET
DANS L’AMANT DE MARGUERITE DURAS » takes a look at the conditions of women
as they are presented in the two novels of two French female writers Violette Leduc and
Marguerite Duras. With the assistance of the theory of feminism, we look at the socioeconomic
and political conditions of women as represented by the two protagonists of the
two novels, Violette Leduc in La Batarde and the anonymous protagonist in Marguerite
Duras’s L’Amant. We discover that in both cases, the women are not only exploited but are
also humiliated by men who occupy dominant positions in the society. We discover too that
in the two novelists, the excesses of men are not allowed to go unchecked. The novelists
combat the excesses of men through their two female protagonists who do so by revolting
against established traditions and institutions cherished by the Western society like marriage,
heterosexual relationship and fidelity in love. In the end, Violette Leduc and Marguerite
Duras show that if women are determined, they can liberate themselves from the dominance
by men and occupy respectful places in the society
