Abstract
Modern societies have totally become close communities as a result of mankind's
tremendous achievements in international relations, communications and diplomatic
exchange which has made cultures and neighbourness globally international. Nations of
the world strive to maintain a bond of cohesion in international affairs and diplomacy has
resulted in the establishment of embassies, high commissions, and consulates between
nations. Diplomats and the counsellors plays a vital roles in promoting, supporting, and
enhancing this relationship between various countries of the world.
In the life of the diplomats, there is a strong link between the official work and
informal social life. Each influence the other in different ways and there is need to search
for a model of how best to organise and integrate the culture of diplomatic leisure.
This thesis is a proposal for an international diplomatic clubhouse in Abuja to
serve the diplomatic missions and their families in Nigeria. The intension of the author is
not only to propose a clubhouse, but also to look into the social needs and requirement of
the diplomats and explore the possibilities of exhibiting how best architectural elements,
form, and space organization could be used to promote and encourage recreational
diplomacy using a uniquely interesting site.
In this regard the thesis could be divided broadly into three main parts. Part one
would be concerned with the literature review related to diplomats and diplomacy, leisure,
recreation and planning for recreational, historical development of club house architecture,
social and psychological factors in architecture, and case studies. Part two would examine
the ways and means of architectural response to the social needs and requirements of the
diplomats. Part three would be principally concerned with site selection, brief
development and design report.
