Abstract
I n the design of buildings and environments, architects , planner setc. often resort to the use of standards in terms of space requirements. Though the dissemination of technology d i c t a t es the fact that , standard evolved are bound to be used in relation to products of technology, behavioral environments need to be designed based on their particular sooting. This is due to the fact that cultures differ, and in, Africa and indeed Nigeria' space requirements vary from evolved and t h i s can be a t t r i b u t ed to both climate and the mode of dressing. These attributes have become customary, traditional and subsequently cultural and the effect of space on traditional performances relating to the social aspects of culture is the main thrust of this thesis. The first chapter is an attempt at highlighting the different aspects of culture, while the second is a spatial exposition of traditional performing arts and crafts . A historical review of theaters forms the third chapter and chapter four deals with case studies relating to the subject matter. Chapter five highlights the thesis s i t e with chapter six i n s i s t i n g of related design parameters and the design, brief. The l a s t two chapter consist of viii evaluations and evolution of solutions leading to formation, of concepts and finally the design report.
