Abstract
I n the design of buildings and environments,
architects , planner setc. often resort to the use
of standards in terms of space requirements.
Though the dissemination of technology d i c t a t es
the fact that , standard evolved are bound to be
used in relation to products of technology,
behavioral environments need to be designed based
on their particular sooting. This is due to the fact
that cultures differ, and in, Africa and indeed
Nigeria' space requirements vary from evolved
and t h i s can be a t t r i b u t ed to both
climate and the mode of dressing. These attributes
have become customary, traditional and subsequently
cultural and the effect of space on traditional
performances relating to the social aspects of
culture is the main thrust of this thesis.
The first chapter is an attempt at highlighting
the different aspects of culture, while the second
is a spatial exposition of traditional performing
arts and crafts . A historical review of theaters
forms the third chapter and chapter four deals with
case studies relating to the subject matter.
Chapter five highlights the thesis s i t e with
chapter six i n s i s t i n g of related design parameters
and the design, brief. The l a s t two chapter consist of
viii
evaluations and evolution of solutions leading
to formation, of concepts and finally the design
report.
