This work is concerned with the study of human relationships in the two novels of Abdoulaye Sadji, Nini and Mai'mouna. It highlights the author!s preoccupations with the changes taking place in the Senegalese society of his tine, that is, the first half of the twentieth century. The first Chapter deals with Nini showing the relationships of the Mulatoes, represented "by Nini, with their families, their peer group, and the other social groups of Saint-Louis, that is, the Whites and the Blacks. It emphasizes the fact that the Blacks were beginning to take over power in the saint-louisian society while the mulatoes were losing their former priviledged situation, a development which they were refusing to accept. The se cond Chapter is a study of the "behaviour of the emerging bourgeoisie of Dakar in Matmouna, its relationship with the other social groups and its attitude vis-a-vis the western and islamo-senegalese cultures. In Chapter 3, the similarities and differences in the two novels are examined. The two novels were written in the some colonial period and describe the sane senegalese society. Nevertheless, they deal with characters from different racial backgrounds who evolve in different social milieus. The fourth Chapter is a study of some of the literary movements that influenced Sadji in his two novels and some of the narrative techniques that he used in transmitting his message. It is argued that the work of Sadji is largely influenced by the French realist novel of the nineteenth century, the French poetry of the same century and the Negritude movement of the twentieth century. It is also argued that he has been able to use competently certain techniques like that of contrast, of description and of languageen_US
