In the world of uncertainties, risk is the one ever present variable in investment decision making. Once Management has a clear cut view of the relationship between risk and returns on investment, rules for undertaking investments can be developed. It is the return on investment which determines the extent of risk the investor can accept. The return on investment also determines to a large extent the demand and price for any given security. It all boils down to the fact that a proper insight can only be gained about any stock market if the relationship between the return on investment and price of shares is properly explored. The return on investment can be said to be governed by the profit available to shareholders for distribution and for purposes of comparability it is calculated as earnings per share. In order to enhance the understanding of the Nigerian Stock Exchange this study titled "The Relationship Between Earnings Per Share and The Price of Shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange" has been undertaken and covers the period 1985 - 1989. The first Chapter therefore explains the background and research problem; it also goes further to consider the purpose and significance as well as the scope and limitations. In the second Chapter on Literature Review, the capital market in general is considered and all the factors responsible for changes in stock price highlighted together with tools of analysis and theories of the stock market. The Chapter on Methodology explains the research design, sample and the construction of market index. The fourth Chapter is on historical background of each of the companies sampled, while the last two Chapters are devoted to research findings, summary, conclusion and recommendations respectively.en_US
