dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study was to assess information management (IM) in National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). Specifically the study sought to; determine the types of information generated and acquired in NAHCON, how information is managed, determine the extent to which information is relevant and useful, determining the extent to which the NAHCON is Psatisfied with management of the available information, and lastly, identify the relevant and available ICTs utilized for information management in the NAHCON. Five research questions were formulated in order to achieve the objectives of the study. A descriptive survey methodology was adopted. The population comprised the entire 94 staff members at the NAHCON’s headquarters in Abuja. The study relied on data collected through an open ended and closed ended questionnaire structured to answer the research questions raised. To analyse the data, responses from the questionnaire were tabulated, coded and processed by use of a computer Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0 programme. The study was significant as it provided a guide that management team will use to review operational procedures and policies to enhance service delivery at the commission. It will help to determine areas of wastage on resources and processes as well as saving on cost effectively. The results found that effective utilisation of ICTs will assist in monitoring operational processes and more critically, improve the level of transparency during reconciliation with stakeholders. The findings have enriched existing knowledge on IM and will be of interest to both researchers and academicians who seek to explore and carry out further research in the field of IM. The major findings from the study revealed that managerial, business, strategic, information on pilgrims’ and statistical information were the most generated and acquired information gotten through a set of criterions. The study further revealed that filling cabinets / shelves, hard drives, and audio/video tapes were the central storage devices used in the commission and also the available information was found to be relevant and highly useful to the commission’s operations. It was added that most respondents were highly satisfied with information management even though it is basically done manually. Finally, it was confirmed that NAHCON’s departments have the required ICTs in place but were faced with a number of challenges in the use of the ICT equipment. It was recommended that the commission should develop and adopt an integrated and accelerated tailored hybrid- management information system (MIS) and thus; align itself to using ICTs as a strategic tool for ensuring global benchmarks are cascaded to all levels of the hierarchy. | en_US |
