Abstract
This work has carefully and critically assessed the impact of good managenent
performance appraisal practice as a motivation factor towards attainment of corporate
goals, excellence and as an effective tool for managing Managers in a depressed economy
like Nigeria. This was done to test the hypothesis that good management performance
appraisal practice is a motivational factor towards achieving corporate goals and
excellence which was accepted finally. The survey sampled the opinion of fourty
managers from the UBA branches in Zaria in respect of the company's policies on
management performance appraisal, motivation and attainment of corporate goals and
excellence for the past five years (1991 - 95).

important resource in organization that needs motivation to attain corporate objectives.
Organizations just like individuals will forever be in pursuit of excellence. Resources
including human must be properly managed if an organization has to meaningfully
develop. The developmental efforts of an organization could only he channelled to the
right places, when the strength an weakness of (hat organization's management team is
known with certainly and this could be done through management performance appraisal

global management problem especially for the third world. The survey of UBA
manager's opinion show that there has been a good management performance appraisal
practice with few lapses. Also noted was that the workers performance for the year
under review has improved reasonably. The author believes that all other management
variables being equal. The motivation for this achievement is good management
performance appraisal practice of UBA.
The study also show that the theoretical framework of the Hank's performance
appraisal effort was sound for managers' motivation and control but the implementation
needs fine tunning.
