Abstract
A low cost kerosine fired incubator with heating from below was developed. Various methods of internal temperature control inside the incubator were explored. Airtight sealed diaphramic control was not possible due to the closeness of the solubility index of the volatile liguids and locally available adhesives. The sensitivity of the bimetallic strip was low in the temperature range of the incubator. (35°C - 39°C) An electromechanical method of temperature control using electromagnet was designed and applied to circumvent the above problems. The highest average daily dry bulb temperature value inside the incubator was 38°C while the lowest value was 35°C during the period of incubation. The highest average daily dry bulb temperature inside the room was 31°C while the lowest was 23°C. The high relative humidity value obtained for the period of incubation was 60% while the lowest value was 45%. Relative humidity was negatively related to the incubator temperature while the room temperature was positively related to the incubator temperature. Analysis shows that there was no statistically significant linear relationship between the incubator temperature and the room temperature at 5% level of significance. Also there was no statistically linear relationship between the incubator humidity and the room temperature at 5% level of significance. And there was no statistically significant relationship between the incubator temperature, the room humidity and the room temperature at 5% level of significance. The hatching result gave a hatchability of 86%, 63% and 57% for group I, II, and III respectively, for the third experiment which show that the hatchability decreased with the days of storage before incubation.
