"THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENTS' PERFORMANCE IN PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES AND THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN INTEGRATED SCIENCE USING NISTEP MODE OF TEACHING

Abstract
The quest for the improvement o f students’ performance in practical activity and t their achievement and the relationship between the two, in integrated science at the Junior Secondary School (J SS) level prompted the need for this study. The intent of the study, therefore, was to examine the relationship between students’ performance in practical activity and their academic achievement in integrated science using NISTEP mode of teaching. Six research questions were formulated and six null hypotheses were stated and tested to answer the research questions. Test o f Integrated Science Practical Skills (TOISPS) and Integrated Science Achievement. Test (ISAT) were used to collect data from 100 subjects in the Junior Secondary School Classes III. the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r) statistics was used to test for the relationship while t-test statistics was used to test for the significance o f the difference between the mean scores o f the subjects at 0.05 level o f confidence. From analysis o f data the following findings were reached. 1 There was high positive relationship between students’ performance in practical activity and their academic achievement in integrated science when exposed to NISTEP mode of teaching. 2 Male students’ performance in practical activity is related to their academic achievement in integrated science when exposed to NISTEP mode o f teaching. 3 There was high positive relationship between female students’ performance in practical activity and their academic achievement in integrated science when exposed to NISTEP mode o f teaching. 4 Students’ exposed to NISTEP mode o f teaching performed better in academic achievement integrated science than those taught with lecture method. 5 There was no significant differences in mean scores the performances o f male and female students in practical activities in integrated science when exposed to NISTEP mode of teaching. 6 Male and female students exposed to NISTEP mode o f teaching do not differ significantly in their academic achievement in integrated science. From the findings o f this study, it was concluded that students’ performance in practical activities and their academic achievement are significantly related positively when NISTEP mode of teaching is used in integrated science teaching at Junior Secondary School level. NISTEP mode o f teaching enhances students’ performance in practical activities and their academic achievement in integrated science or Junior Secondary School level. NISTEP mode o f teaching is also gender - friendly. It enhances both, male and female students’ performance in practical activities and their academic achievement in integrated science at Junior Secondary School level. Recommendation were made, on the use o f NISTEP mode o f teaching integrated science at Junior Secondary School level based on the findings of the study.
