Abstract
ABSTRACT The problem of the study is the "Reflections of Culture in Babroidery as a Medium of Cloth Decoration in Ilorin" Specific objectives that were focused upon incluaed: a) To investigate the origin of embroidery in Ilorin, in order to determine its originality; b) To find out possible factors responsible for the present range of motifs in Ilorin; c) To determine the significance of various categories of embroidery; d) To develop embroidery related designs from some motifs used in Ilorin using used X-ray films and; e) To suggest possible ways of preserving the craft. The strategic location of Ilorin coupled with some other factors served as motivations towards the search of cultural reflections in embroidery within Ilorin as a Yoruba settlement. Similar studies have been conducted with the Hausa context. Two instruments were used in the collection of data along with a camera as an aid in documenting selected samples. The questionnaire and structured interview schedule were used. 100 questionnaires were administered and 85 respondents supplied the information that was used for the study. Thirteen informants responded for the structured interview schedule. All the respondents, who are inhabitants of Ilorin were selected by random sampling. Descriptive analysis was employed along with the representaton of some information in tables with the respective percentage response for the items. The ethnographic nature of the study warranted the use of descriptive analysis. vii Included among the conclusion drawn based on the results of the findings of the study are the following:- 1) Hand embroidery had been practised among the Yoruba indigenes of Ilorin who are the early settlers. Due to later contact with the North through trade and inter-tribal wars there has been a high level of acculturation which is evident in the designs used for embroidery presently, 2) Despite the problems associated with making embroidery, especially the hand made ones, patronage may not drop drastically due to the prestige accorded to embroidery. 3) Creativity of individuals and embroidery makers is a major end important source of embroidery design in Ilorin along with other sources. 4) There is a consicerable representation of cultural traits in embroidery as recognised by the respondents in the different categories. 5) X-ray films are durable and reusable for production of embroidery related designs in print,
