dc.description.abstract | This study investigates the effects of traffic congestion on travel time along Station-Stadium, Kawo-Mando and Yakubu-Gowon way within Kaduna Metropolis using GPS and GIS technique. Among the objectives were mapping the congested corridors, determining the speed, travel and delay time for each segment of the corridors, determining the difference between car travel time in the different segment and car and bus in the same segment of the corridors and also examining the causes and impact of traffic congestion on travel time. The methods used in data collection are, GIS was used in mapping the congested corridors and the variations in speed were also mapped. Descriptive statics was used to acquire average speed, travel and delay time for the corridors. T-Test analysis was used to determine the difference between car travel time in the different segment and car and bus travel time in the same segment of the corridor. Four hundred (400) copies of questionnaire were administered to drivers and passengers of (cars and buses), in which Cross-Tabulation was used for the analysis. The speed, travel and delay time for Station-Stadium and Kawo-Mando corridors revealed low speed and increases in travel and delay time during the morning and evening peak periods while Yakubu-Gowon Way gave a different partner during the afternoon period. The study also revealed the main causes of traffic congestion for the three (3) corridors are inadequate road capacity. The social impacts of congestion on travel time are unpredictable travel time along Station- Stadium corridor with 61% and Kawo-Mando with 54.5% and extra time with 46.6% was the highest along Yakubu-Gowon way. Economic impact revealed fuel consumption as highest with 51% along Station-Stadium corridor and working hour is reduced were the highest along Kawo-Mando with 50% and Yakubu-Gowon way with 51.7%. Delay experienced due to traffic congestion showed that 98% of the respondents acknowledge that traffic congestion brings about delay. Extent of delay showed Station-Stadium and Kawo-Mando has 15mins, while Yakubu gowon way has 10mins. Time of the xvi day congestion is experienced has 7-9am and 3-6pm for Station-Stadium and Kawo-Mando while Yakubu Gowon has 7-9am and 11-2pm. Congestion during the week shows weekdays as having the highest and weekends having the lowest for the three corridors. The study recommendations among others, include expansion of Yakubu-Gowon Way, construction of flyover around Stadium-Station roundabout and also decentralization of government offices to reduce influx of worker into the metropolis. Provision of an affordable and functional mass transit vehicles to provide alternative use of private vehicles, will help in reducing the number of vehicles on the corridors by the state government. Linking traffic information system (TIS) to the State radio by the government of Kaduna state, this would relay to commuter corridors that are congested and to provide alternate corridors, which are less congested. The use of Geographic Information System in traffic monitoring is highly relevant for solving issues relating to traffic congestion. Building of fuel station along major corridors should be discouraged because they contribute to traffic congestion | en_US |
