dc.description.abstractContemporary Visual Arts is gradually becoming popular in Nigeria with the attendant need for the provision of exposition facilities. The proposal of the NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART, ABUJA is of great value, coming at this time when there is also the need to increase art appreciation in the people. This is because of the relevance of art to National awareness and development, the art of a people being the outward and visible symbol of their culture and civilization. To this end a critical review of relevant literature and appraisal of existing case studies will proffer a good deal of information as to the pros and cons of gallery design. Art appreciation is in itself dependent on level of awareness and education, and on psychological make-up. As such it is the duty of the designer to study these factors indepth to evolve a proposal that will be responsive to art appreciation. Sequel to these the design is approached with all the inferences made from the study taken into consideration. This thesis proposes to do precisely this and apply all observations made in the ensuing designen_US
