Abstract
This report is one phase of a study of homemakers in
Ahmadu Bello University campus and in Shika village in relation
to their performing and preference ratings of some household
tasks. The objectives of the research included:
(i) To identify, compare and study the characteristics of
activities which were liked and disliked by homemakers
(ii) To study the factors that contribute to the preference
of certain household tasks.
In this study, information on the homemakers' social and
economic characteristics details were obtained in order to
determine the relationships between these characteristics and
the types of tasks performa by them and their preference
rating of these tasks. Other factors which the author considered
possible to influence both the performance and preference of the
household tasks included location, age, marital status, length
of marriage, number of children and the educational level of the
respondents.
The data for the study were collected from 192 respondents
resident in two locations (ABU quarters and Shika) by means of a
questionnaire. The respondents varied from full-time homemakers
to very highly placed career women.
Results of the -study show that a significant proportion of
the household tasks such as food preparation, food serving,
cleaning up used kitchen utensils, washing of children and other
family clothings, budgeting, physical care of children, teaching
and coaching children and collecting water were performed by a
majority (77.1 - 94.5%) of the respondents from ABU quarters,
on the other hand, food preparation and serving, cleaning used
kitchen utensils, washing of children and other family clothings
were the activities performed by majority (54 - 94%) of the
respondents resident in Shika village. Shopping is the least
rated task by both ABU and Shika respondents.
