Abstract
The hotel institution is one which naturally evolved
through the ages, out of necessity, to its present status as
a place of accommodation, catering and entertainment for the
convenience of travellers and guests in general.
The demand for hotel accommodation stem from various
forms of travel among which tourism is foremost, and with the
global boom in the tourism industry, hotels have grown beyond
mere places of temporary accommodation to a vital component of
the tourism product with its objectives widening in order to
fulfil the desires of the expected guests which include
recreation, rest, escapism and the fulfilment of a dream or
fantasy. Ironically, a study of hotels, especially in
Nigeria, reveals that adeguate emphasis is laid on the
functionality and ease of operation while very little effort has been made towards creating the desired fantastic and emotionally arousing hotel, through the use of form and other architectural devices, which will enhance the psychological fulfilment of the guests.
Nigeria is a haven of unexplored diverse natural, cultural and historical attractions which if coupled with equally intriguing tourist accommodation at the right locations, will make her a tourism giant. It is therefore a challenge to architects and developers to take bold steps
towards providing tourist accommodations which go beyond the vi ordinary. Into a place of fantasy and convenience for tourists and guests in general.
