The research is concerned with environmental sanitation with specific attention to the generation, collection and disposal of domestic refuse within Jos metropolis. The common sight of street and house litters and open refuse dump along streets have resulted to scenic problems and has become a potential source of health hazzard. The efforts of the government and it's agencies towards solving the refuse problem have failed to yeild any significant result. It is in this light that the researcher has set out to find out the facts that can best answer or explain the situation. The facts gathered have been use to recommend some policy alternatives and ways of implementing them, with the view of improving the sanitation of Jos environment. In gathering the required data, the researcher has made use of both random and stratified sampling to select the streets and households on which the questionnaire were administered. The researcher also made use of oral interviews. Secondary informations wore gathered through the use of published and unpublished articles. The findings show that both the government and the public have contributed to the present sanitary condition of Jos township, it is recommended that the government should intensify it's public enlightenment campaign on the dangers of poor refuse disposal, provide convinience places or methods by which households can get rid of their domestic refuse hygienically, improve the quality of refuse disposal workers and buy more refuse disposal vehicles and equipments. The public on their own parts, must cultivate hygienic attitude by providing covered dustbins at their houses and avoid the indiscriminate throwing of refuse in the environment. Finally, the researcher has recommended the involvement of private entrepreneur in refuse disposal and the charging of fees for refuse services.en_US
