The trend of Library Architecture from the ancient history reveals the metamorphosis it has undergone. This trend can be likened to the trend of human knowledge right from the stone age (Primitive age) to the age of iron and steel and finally up to our present day age of Computer. The advancement in knowledge has resulted in seeking new dimensions of portraying library architecture. This, in modern day, is the evolution of the grid system design (the modular design system). This thesis is virtually a study of the use of this system in academic library buildings. The first chapter proposes and defines the area of concentration. The second chapter looks at library architecture from history to date. The third chapter picks on case studies of existing academic libraries both abroad and at home - their problems, and possible solutions were made. The fourth chapter which is the research chapter looks at the modular design system in library. What factors should guide module size selection,, the problems associated with uniform grid and attempts were made to evolve grid sizes for certain areas of the library. Chapter five studied the site and chapter six which is the design proposal is where the application of the precee-ding chapters is seen. My own contribution in modern academic library design vis-a-vis the modular system concentrated on, is the proposal of outdoor rending areas, provision snack bars on the roof top and informal reading areasen_US
