This study examined the Coping Strategies of Household in Zinder Region of Niger Republic. The objectives of this study are to: Examine the livelihood of communities in Zinder Region, the nature of the 2009-2010 droughts, the most vulnerable communities to the drought in Zinder Region and the coping strategies of the people during the 2009-2010 droughts. The study is limited to sixteen out of the thirty three zones in the study area. 382 questionnaire and focus group discussion were used to obtain information from the respondents. Systematic sampling was used to select the zones and purposive sampling method to select the number of respondent. Descriptive statistics and Chi square test were employed for analysis. The results obtained revealed that there were more male headed households (87.4%) in the study area compared to female headed household (12.6%). The studies also revealed that the majority of the respondents are famers (70%) and were in the 50 to 55 age group (27.5%). The majority of households (24.6 %) in the area had large family sizes which ranged predominantly between 9 and 10 members. It revealed that Zinder is a low literate community, as about 34.6% of the respondents never attended school. The study also found out that the drought seriously impacted on the crop production and caused the loss of 83% of the poultry. Farmers also employed a number of drought coping strategies like: reducing size of the food portions, skipping meals, eating wild fruits and vegetables, borrowing and migration. The Chi square result verified a significant relationship between household‟s characteristics, strategies of coping and grain production levels during drought. The research recommends Integration of Indigenous Knowledge Systems into weather monitoring. The indigenous knowledge systems used in crisis anticipation and response to droughts are very important in safeguarding the lives of the people in the communities.en_US
