| dc.description.abstract | An investigation into the effects of mulching and spacing on the growth and yield of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe). was undertaken at Samaru during the 1986 wet season. The treatments comprised three levels of mulching (0, 5 and 10 cm thick), three intra-row plant spacings (10, 20 and 30 cm) with the same inter-row spacings of 15 cm and two varieties ('Tafin Giwa' and Yatsun Biri') in randomised complete block design, replicated three times. The results revealed that mulching significantly increased the number of offshoots, plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and leaf, stem, rhizome and root dry weights. Total rhizome yield was significant and positively correlated with yield characters. The 5 and 10 cm levels of mulch remarkably out-yielded the unmulched treatment by 29.5 and 21.3 per cent respectively. Generally, no differences was observed in growth and yield at mulch levels above 5 cm. Spacing had no v i s i b l e effect on most of the parameters studied. The growth and yield of the two v a r i e t i e s differed markedly. Variety 'Tafin Giwa' was overall superior 'Yatsun Biri' and infact out-yielded it by 17.6 per cent | en_US |
