Abstract
The effectiveness of two common arrangements of overlapping hoops, the diamond-shaped and the rectangular overlapping hoops, is studied in relation to the single rectangular overlapping hoops arrangement. Short reinforced concrete columns are used for this purpose. The tests are divided into three parts. In the first part, the relative effectiveness of the two arrangements of overlapping hoops to the single hoops arranagement is studied. In the second part, the diameter of hoops is changed and its effect on ductility studied. The third part deals with the study of the effect of concrete grade on ductility of confined concrete. To determine the ductility of each arrangement, stress-strain curves are drawn. From theory, it is known that the ascending part of the curve has no effect on the ductility of confined concrete. But the angle of slope of the falling branch determines its ductility. This angle is therefore calculated and used as a measure of the ductility of each specimen. The smaller the angle, the more ductile is the confined concrete column. The Universal Testing Machine is used to carry out these tests. Concrete Cube Strength Test and and Tensile Test for Steel are carried out. The strains are measured by Dial Gauge and Electrical Strain
