| dc.description.abstract | The Plant Olax manni. is a shrub widely distributed in West Africa and it is employed in traditional medicine in Northern Nigeria to treat poisonous snakebites. General phytochemical examination of the various crude extracts of the leaves of this plant revealed the presence of tannins, fatty acids, saponins, sterioids/terpenoids. Compound C1 was isolated from (he petroleum ether extract of the leaves. This was shown to be 5 (0-methoxy phenyl) pent - 2,4 - dienoic aeid using spectroscopic studies (UV, IR, HNMR, 13C-NMR, COSY and DEPT). Invivo anti-snake venom studies of the methanolic extract against venom of Naja nigricollis and Echis carinatus using Swiss albino mice showed significant anti venin activity. The extract was shown to possess protective activity against the venom of these two poisonous snakes. However, the anti-venin activity is more pronounced against the venom of N. nigricollis. | en_US |
