Polyvinyl chloride pipes of 10cm I.D were used to study moisture and salt distribution in soil profiles overlying ground water at various depths (42, 60 and 90cm) and also, at various ground water electrolyte concentration (1500, 3000 and 4500 mgKcl per 1itre of water) . While daily evaporation was constant at 0.6cm and relative humidity at 50+ 35C, moisture loss and salt, accumulation increased with decrease in soil profile depth. The role of solute - induced flow was significant when the effect of ground water electrolyte concentration was used to determine moisture loss and ch1oride ion accumu1ation . Depth of ground water tabic? had little effect on daily moisture distribution pattern along the soil profile.en_US
